Webinar: GHHG Discussion Series on COVID-19: "The fight against Covid-19 in Africa and the road ahead: a perspective from the ground"
On Wednesday, 4 November 2020, 3:30 – 4:30 PM CEST, the Global Health Hub Germany (GHHG) will continue the discussion series on COVID-19 focusing on the topic " The fight against Covid-19 in Africa and the road ahead: a perspective from the ground”.
Predictions and modelling about Covid-19 indicated that Africa would be hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, but this has seemingly not yet been the case. So why were the direst of predictions so far off?
Dr Ingrid Hamm, Managing Director of the Global Perspectives Initiative will be interviewing Dr. Solomon Zewdu, Deputy Director, Africa for Global Health and Development + COVID-19 coordinator for Africa at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to share his personal view on how the virus has developed in Africa, what collateral damage it is causing and the road ahead for the continent.
Dr Zewdu, who leads the foundation’s Covid-19 response in Africa, brings his experience fighting diseases and managing emergency situations as a medical doctor; Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force; and the country director of one of the largest PEPFAR programs in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to an update on the status quo and an outlook, the conversation will explore the lessons that can be learned from the continent on how to manage the spread of Covid-19 and foster regional and global cooperation – lessons not just for other African countries, but also for the rest of the world. The conversation will also interrogate the crucial role that technology and innovation have played in the fight against the pandemic and the benefits of multilateral cooperation to achieve common goals.
