Invitation: 5th Webinar of the GHHGs Discussion Series on COVID-19: "The social impact of Covid-19 containment measures; an often neglected complication"

When:   -

Dear Madam or Sir, Dear Members of the Global Health Hub Germany,

on Wednesday, 1 July 2020, 4 - 5 pm CET, the Global Health Hub Germany (GHHG) will continue the discussion series on COVID-19 focusing on the topic "The social impact of Covid-19 containment measures in Low and Middle Income Countries".

The Covid-19 pandemic has become a global threat, which lead many governments in Low and Middle Income Countries to copy the European model of containment including rigorous lockdown, physical distancing and closure of businesses and gatherings in order to slow-down the transmission of the virus. These measures had a disastrous impact on  disadvantaged population groups such as migrant workers, small businesses or daily wage earners which make up a large proportion of the population in poorer countries highlighting social inequalities and the vulnerability of these societies.

In order to get a better understanding of the serious impact of containment measures on large population groups in countries of the Global South, testimonies of academic researchers from some of the affected countries will be shared; as a contrast. the situation in South Korea will be shown, a high income country with an alternative strategy.

The Webinar will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Axel Kroeger, Freiburg University and WHO consultant, expert in operational research and capacity building in the area of infectious diseases and health systems analysis and by Tatiana Rivera, PhD student from Colombia.

Contributions are:

  • “The plight of migrant workers in India” by Dhia Joseph Chackalackal, Master student from Kerala, India.

  • “Venezuelan migrants in Colombia, getting stuck during the forced re-patriation process”, by Tatiana Rivera and Rocio Cardenas, Instituto Departamental de Salud, Cúcuta, Colombia.

  • “Coronavirus lockdown in Nigeria: No work, No food” by Peter Asaga, Institute of Infectious Diseases, Keffi, Nigeria.

  • “Caring for the elderly and disabled during the corona crisis in South Korea” by Su Yeon Jang, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea.
