Invitation: 4th webinar of the GHHG discussion series on COVID-19: "Research is our exit strategy – the role of science in the COVID-19 pandemic"
Dear Madam or Sir, Dear Members of the Global Health Hub Germany,
on Monday, 22 June 2020, 2 - 3 pm CET, the Global Health Hub Germany (GHHG) will continue the discussion series on COVID-19 focusing on the topic "Research is our exit strategy – the role of science in the COVID-19 pandemic".
“Science is our exit strategy”: statements like this have become increasingly common while countries – especially in Europe and Asia – are increasingly, if tentatively, emerging from strict lockdowns as the number of COVID-19 infections is going down.
Even during the pandemic the role of scientists and their advice to governments around the world has been as prominent as never before. This has, of course, not happened entirely without tensions: in some countries, scientists have accused governments of not heeding their advice; in others, leaders tout outlandish treatments without any evidence. And vaccines are still variously months, even years in the future.
With all this in mind, now seems like a good time to consider the role of science in ending the pandemic: representatives from academia, funders and global health partnerships will discuss questions ranging from our current progress in developing tools against COVID-19 to the role of scientific advice in decision making.
The webinar is hosted by
Caroline Schmutte, member of the GHHG interim steering committee and head of the Wellcome Trust’s Berlin office and Prof. Dr. Till Bärnighausen, co-chair of the GHHG interim steering committee and director of the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health.
- Dr. Christoph Benn, Director, Global Health Diplomacy, Joep Lange Institute
- Dr. med. Claudia Denkinger, Head of the Division of Tropical Medicine, Heidelberg University Hospital
- Dr. Marina Koch-Krumrei, Head of the Department of International Relations at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina
- Samia Saad, Director of Resource Mobilization and Investor Relations, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)
