GHHG Discussion Series on COVID-19

POSTPONED: 6th Webinar of the GHHGs Discussion Series on COVID-19: "The fast-evolving fight against Covid-19 in Africa: a perspective from the ground”

Unfortunately we will have to postpone the Webinar "The fast-evolving fight against Covid-19 in Africa: a perspective from the ground", which was planned for July 8th 2020 (5 – 6 PM), to a hopefully not too distant date in the next weeks due to the on-going internet and mobile phone connectivity challenges in Ethiopia. We will be in touch with a new date as soon as connectivity is restored and thank you for your understanding.

On Wednesday, 8 July 2020, 5 - 6 pm CEST, the Global Health Hub Germany (GHHG) will continue the discussion series on COVID-19 focusing on the topic "The fast-evolving fight against Covid-19 in Africa: a perspective from the ground".

Predictions and modelling about COVID-19 indicated that Africa would be the next high-risk area but this has seemingly not yet been the case. So why were the most dire of predictions so far off?

Dr Ingrid Hamm, Managing Director of the Global Perspectives Initiative, will be interviewing Dr Solomon Zewdu, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Deputy Director of Health Ethiopia & Africa, to share his personal view from the ground on how the virus has developed in Africa.

Dr Solomon, who leads the foundation’s Covid-19 response in Africa, brings his experience fighting diseases and managing emergency situations as a medical doctor; Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force; and the country director of one of the largest PEPFAR programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recently he shared his insights on Africa and COVID-19.

The conversation will explore the lessons that can be learned from the continent on how to manage the spread of COVID-19 and  foster regional and global cooperation – lessons not just for other African countries, but also for the Global North. The conversation will also interrogate the crucial role that technology and innovation have played in the fight against the pandemic and the benefits of multilateral cooperation to achieve common goals.
